London-based oil painter Salma Istwani creates visually dramatic, often enigmatic and sometimes surreal depictions of human form and experience. Her recent work reimagines subjects drawn from art history, biblical stories and inherited cultural ideals, bringing traditional imagery and painting technique into dialogue with contemporary perspectives and symbols, using the familiar language of the past to challenge established narratives and question the social hierarchies, values and systems they have helped shape.

Salma is a member of RIOT SOUP, an art collective and community for Black and Brown women artists in London.
